HWS LEADS CERTIFICATE

HWS Leads curriculum

The HWS Leads leadership certificate program was a significant reason why I choose to attend Hobart. This program has allowed me to expand my understanding of leadership and teamwork.

LEADERSHIP THEORY 1

The gateway course into the certificate program.  By providing an overview of contemporary leadership theories, this course deepens students’ understanding of leadership and balances academic enrichment with engaged learning. Students will begin working on their individual portfolio that chronicles their growth, perspectives, values, experiences and personal leadership understanding.

LEADERSHIP THEORY 2

An advanced leadership theory course that focuses on the conceptual understanding and technical skills necessary for leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation. The course demonstrates the capacity to which these concepts overlap and apply to the work of contemporary leaders who must navigate the public, private and non-profit sectors. The course provides an in-depth examination of various leadership theories and prepare students to apply innovative problem-solving concepts and techniques in both local and global contexts.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Introduces students to the basics of public speaking and presentation techniques, an essential leadership skill. Topics covered include: critiquing a speech, analyzing an audience, exploring a topic, arranging a speech, the use of language and the performance of speech through the voice and body. The course provides a practical opportunity for students to become a better public speaker while framing techniques for ethical, inclusive, value-driven leaders who are poised to articulate their views.

FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE

Designed to be the certificate’s capstone experience.  Students serve one semester in a substantial leadership role on campus or in the community.

GENEVA INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY BOARD

For my Fieldwork project I worked with the Geneva Industrial Development Agency (IDA) with various projects they were managing. I was the first HWS student to work with the City Assistant Manager Adam Blowers and the IDA. Using my entrepreneurial studies background, I helped Adam and the IDA with projects including expanding the Geneva Enterprise Center's function for the city as well as helping Adam's office with state requirements and accreditation.

MY EXPERIENCE

Many of my fondest memories of classroom experiences at HWS occurred in my HWS Leads courses. The passionate students in the classes and the thought provoking exercises made us grow together and share our various perspectives. The confidence I have gained in my discussing difficult topics I know I will use for the remainder of my life.

My practicum work taught me how to apply leadership in the world beyond HWS. Being able to work with various leaders of the Geneva community at the IDA showed me the various factors that leaders must take into consideration. Leaders must be aware of the good and bad implications their actions may create.
